I had gone without a run the past 7 days, the longest I haven’t run ever since I started about 10 months ago. I had good reasons not to run: my wife had just given birth, I donated a unit of blood for my wife’s operation, the new baby had kept us awake at night and I was averaging 3-4 hours of sleep, and all that took its toll on me, I developed a cold and a sore throat from the lack of rest.
I was itching to go out for a run and had planned to do so Thursday morning. However, our baby decided to give us another sleepless night so I decided to sleep in. I was determined to run by the end of the day though. I got the chance around 7pm. I excitedly put on my running gear, and I noted that my headband even felt quite tight, a sign that I had not run for too long. As I was about to step out, it started drizzling! I just shrugged my shoulders and went ahead. I thought it would be cooler but boy it was humid! The combination of the heat absorbed by the pavement and the light rain resulted in a very humid atmosphere.
I ran very conservatively since I was still feeling the effect of all the factors I mentioned above. (To the doctors out there, what is the effect of donating a unit of blood 3 days before running 10k?) I made sure my pace was comfortable enough to sustain for a 10k distance. With less than 1km to go, the rain started to pour and it felt quite refreshing compared to the humidity earlier. I ended up with an average pace of 7:36, my second slowest 10k pace ever since I was able to run this distance. I didn’t feel bad though, considering the circumstances. I was just glad to be back on the road.

With the arrival of DATC Jr., I am amazed that you could still run! Wow! Where did you get all that stored energy? Is there a special type of multivitamins that you’re taking?

you’ll fatigue sooner… that’s why it was a good idea to run at a slower pace than usual. You should be taking more fluids also, to replace the blood you’ve lost
If you want to hasten the blood forming process, you can take 1 325 mg/tab of ferrous sulfate daily for now.

Hi Nora, no special vitamins, I’m just afraid of getting fat

Ibanrunner, the challenge is still waking up at 5:30AM despite getting up a couple of times during the night to change diapers. Yes, we met at the Manila Half, you were wearing red I recall. See you in the other races!
Wayne, my runs are back to normal, I no longer feel as sluggish as the run I described here.
