I read in today’s papers the announcement of the Takbo Bayani with 5k/10k/21k events. However, I also read in Bull Runner’s list of 2008 races that the 21k event is for men only. I clarified this with the organizers via email exchange and here was their response: “It was a decision made by the Marikina Sports Commission to limit the 21k to male participants only because they felt that there might be very few or no female participants at all. We’ll take note of your concern and maybe in our succeeding events we will consider all genders in the 21k category.”
In the Manila Half Marathon, out of 181 participants, 23 or 13% were female. I don’t know if that can be considered “very few” or not enough to allow women in the 21k but if you’re a woman and you want to join the 21k of Takbo Bayani, let your voice be heard!
The organizers can be contacted as follows: 812.1200, 812.0702 or (0922) 860-1240. Email: bf.funrun@gmail.com

Let me say, pretty chauvinistic — and unfortunately, characteristic of the leadership there in the city and MMDA.

Hi DATC, Marga and Johnny. It’s wrong of the leadership of Takbo Bayani to do this. I remembered back in 1972 when I started in road racing here in the States, I helped some prominent promoters here in San Francisco regarding women’s running. From that came some races like the Nike Women’s Marathon, the Avon Runs, etc.
It’s like pre-1971 all over again.

the race organizer obviously is not a runner and don’t know much about running. Makes me remember the K. Switzer story at Boston

Weird. The fastest Filipino marathon runner, male or female is not even as fast as the top female marathones (Radcliffe, Kastor, Ndereba, Wami, etc.)

And to think I was outrun by several women during the Manila 21K.

Halloo DATC! Thanks for taking the time to question them on this and for actually pointing this issue out in your blog…
Harumph and double harumph to them!
Talaga nga namang progresibo ang marikina, ano?
